Your Room-by-Room Deep Cleaning Guide

There’s a certain kind of peace that comes after a deep clean.

The kind where the floors feel different under your feet.
Where the air smells fresh.
Where the kitchen counters finally breathe again.
Where home feels a little lighter.

At Habitat for Humanity Williamson-Maury, we talk a lot about the power of home. And sometimes caring for a home looks less like a renovation project and more like opening the windows, turning up the music, and tackling the spaces we’ve ignored all winter long.

So whether you’re preparing for spring, resetting after a busy season, or just trying to reclaim your space one room at a time, here’s a deep cleaning checklist to help you get started.

Start With the “Often Forgotten” Spots

Before you dive into organizing bins or scrubbing floors, start with the places we all overlook:

  • Ceiling fans

  • Baseboards

  • Window sills

  • Light switches and door handles

  • Air vents and return filters

  • Behind appliances

  • Under furniture cushions

  • Trash cans and recycling bins

  • Cabinet fronts and drawer handles

  • Walls with fingerprints or scuffs

Small details make a big difference. Sometimes a home doesn’t need a total makeover. It just needs attention.

Kitchen Deep Clean Checklist

The kitchen works hard every day. Give it a reset.

Appliances

  • Clean out the refrigerator and freezer

  • Toss expired food and wipe shelves

  • Degrease the stovetop and oven hood

  • Run a cleaning cycle on the dishwasher

  • Wipe down the microwave inside and out

  • Pull out appliances and sweep underneath

Surfaces

  • Sanitize countertops

  • Wipe cabinet doors and handles

  • Scrub the sink and garbage disposal

  • Mop floors thoroughly

  • Clean backsplash and grout lines

Organization

  • Reorganize pantry shelves

  • Donate unused kitchen gadgets

  • Match food containers with lids (finally)

Bathroom Deep Clean Checklist

A clean bathroom changes the whole mood of a home.

  • Scrub showers, tubs, and grout

  • Wash shower curtains and bath mats

  • Clean mirrors and light fixtures

  • Disinfect sinks, toilets, and counters

  • Wipe cabinets and drawers inside and out

  • Replace old sponges and toiletries

  • Mop floors and sanitize corners

Bonus points for fresh towels and a candle afterward.

Bedroom Reset Checklist

Bedrooms should help us rest. Deep cleaning helps create that feeling again.

  • Wash all bedding, including comforters and pillows

  • Rotate or vacuum mattresses

  • Dust nightstands, lamps, and blinds

  • Clean under the bed

  • Donate clothes you no longer wear

  • Organize drawers and closets

  • Open the windows for fresh air

Sometimes peace starts with making the bed and clearing the chair covered in laundry.

Living Room Deep Clean Checklist

This is where life happens. Movie nights. Conversations. Afternoon naps. Build a little breathing room back into it.

  • Vacuum couches and under cushions

  • Dust shelves, frames, and electronics

  • Wipe down remotes and light switches

  • Clean windows and blinds

  • Vacuum rugs thoroughly

  • Untangle cords and declutter surfaces

  • Donate items you no longer use or love

Don’t Forget the Outside

Home starts before you even walk through the door.

  • Sweep porches and walkways

  • Wipe down outdoor furniture

  • Wash windows and screens

  • Clear gutters if needed

  • Pull weeds and trim landscaping

  • Pressure wash siding or sidewalks

  • Replace burnt-out exterior bulbs

One Last Thing

A deep clean doesn’t have to happen all at once.

You don’t need a free weekend, matching storage bins, or a perfectly curated pantry to care for your home. Sometimes it starts with one drawer. One load of laundry. One sink full of dishes.

Homes are lived in. That’s a good thing.

The goal isn’t perfection. It’s creating a space that feels safe, welcoming, and cared for.
