The Comfort of Home
In early spring 2026, Habitat for Humanity Williamson-Maury partnered with Veterans Services of Columbia and the Columbia Veterans Motorcycle Association (Chapter 18-5) to complete a critical home repair for Paul, a long-time Mount Pleasant resident.
Paul's aging HVAC system had finally reached the end of its life, leaving him without a reliable way to heat and cool his home. Replacing the unit not only restored comfort but also improved the home's energy efficiency, helping reduce utility costs and ensuring a safer, healthier living environment year-round.
Growing up in Columbia, Paul attended local schools and played both football and baseball at Columbia Central High School. After graduating in 1964, he was drafted into the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, serving as a military police officer from 1966 to 1968.
When he returned home, Paul worked in construction before turning his lifelong interest in electronics into a career. He eventually opened his own electronics repair shop, where he became known for his ability to build and repair CB radios. A natural problem solver, Paul has always been the kind of person who can figure out just about anything.
Later in life, seeking reliable insurance coverage, Paul took on a new role as a school bus driver for Columbia City Schools. He also transported the high school marching band to football games and competitions, serving students and families throughout the community for more than two decades. Following a stroke, Paul eventually retired. Although he recovered and was invited to return to driving, he chose not to, prioritizing the safety of the students he cared so deeply about.
Today, Paul is the proud father of two children, Amy and Paul Jr., both of whom live in the Columbia area. Amy has been a steadfast advocate for her father and has played a key role in connecting him with Veterans Services, the Veterans Motorcycle Association, and Habitat for Humanity Williamson-Maury.
Thanks to the collaboration of all three organizations, Paul now has a reliable HVAC system that allows him to remain safe and comfortable in the home he loves. The new unit provides dependable heating and cooling through Tennessee's changing seasons, improves indoor air quality, and reduces the strain of costly repairs and high energy bills.
For Paul, this repair offers peace of mind, greater comfort, and the ability to continue living independently in the home where so many memories have been made.
