How long have you been involved with Habitat for Humanity Williamson-Maury?

22 years

What first brought you to Habitat?

I was looking for a tangible way to give back to my community. I love the learning aspect that you get while working on a build site. More importantly, I love neighbors coming together to help out neighbors/families in our community to achieve the dream of homeownership.

Do you remember your very first volunteer day? If so, what was that experience like?

I do remember the early years of volunteering for Habitat for Humanity. The experience was fun and a little intimidating at the same time. It has always been exciting to see the finished home.

Has there been a moment on site that stuck with you?

I think the women builds stand out the most for me. When the women build program started in our area, very few women had any experience working with a power saw, installing siding, or even how to properly caulk windows, etc. Teamwork has always been the key to the success of these build days.

What’s your favorite build site task?

I love working with the power saw or using a nail gun. Really, anything I don't have the opportunity to do very often.

Describe a Habitat volunteer day in three words.

Teamwork, Community, Fun

What’s something volunteering here has taught you?

Volunteering for Habitat for Humanity will give you a chance to meet other like-minded individuals who want to serve the community. I think what I have learned is to trust the process.

Why is this mission important to you personally?

Neighbors serving neighbors through a Christian organization allows me to serve my community and to serve God.

What’s one thing you wish more people knew about Habitat?

That the homes are not free. Homeowners have to put in so much work. It is not easy.

How does volunteering make you feel connected to others?

Volunteering gives me a sense of community with a common goal.

What’s one reason someone should volunteer with Habitat this year?

I would encourage anyone who has never volunteered for Habitat for Humanity to try it just once. There are tasks for everyone, regardless of your experience. You will walk away from the build site at the end of the day having learned a few new skills and, yes, a little tired.
